Emergency call-outs

Emergency electrician for Point Chevalier, 24/7

Electrical trouble does not wait for business hours. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for homes and businesses in Point Chevalier and the suburbs around it. Call 021 156 4005.

When to call us straight away

Call 021 156 4005 at any hour if you have:

  • a burning smell, smoke or scorching at a socket, switch, light or the switchboard;
  • sparking or crackling from a fitting or an appliance plug;
  • water getting into a light fitting, a socket or the board;
  • no power at your house while the rest of the street has it;
  • a power line or service cable damaged, sagging or down after a storm;
  • a breaker or RCD that trips again every time you reset it.

If anything is on fire, call 111 first. Keep well away from fallen lines and damaged cable, and only turn the power off at the main switch if you can reach it safely.

Is it an outage, or just your house?

Vector owns the power lines that supply Point Chevalier, and when a whole street goes dark it is usually on Vector's side. Before calling an electrician, check Vector's power outage page for your address. Vector lists cars hitting power poles, birds or helium balloons flying into lines, and bad weather blowing branches onto overhead lines among the causes of unplanned outages.

If there is no outage listed and your neighbours have power, report it on Vector's page so Vector can check its side, because the fault may be on your side of the point of supply: the service line from the boundary to your meter, the switchboard or the wiring in the house. That part belongs to the property owner and needs an electrician, and it is where our electrical fault finding starts.

One more thing Vector points out: after an outage, a property can be left disconnected if a safety problem is found, because an installation must meet New Zealand's electrical safety requirements before it can be safely connected again. If that happens to you, we can find and fix what is wrong.

What happens when you call

  1. Call 021 156 4005

    Tell us what happened, what you can see or smell, and whether anyone is in danger. If there is fire or a fallen line, call 111 first.

  2. Make it safe

    Our electrician isolates the fault so the rest of the house can be used safely, where that is possible.

  3. Find the cause

    The circuit is tested to find what failed and why, rather than resetting it and hoping.

  4. Repair or plan the next step

    Where the repair can be done there and then, it is. Where the fix is bigger, such as a new board, we make the installation safe and plan the rest with you. Repairs to fixed wiring are tested and certified.

Shops and businesses

Power loss in a shop or office on Point Chevalier Road or Great North Road, so you can trade again. More on our commercial electrical page.

Emergency call-out questions

Do you really answer at night and at weekends?

Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends.

Should I call you or Vector?

If the street is out, check Vector's outage page first, because no electrician can restore the network. If it is only your property, or something is smoking or sparking, call us.

Someone in the house relies on medical equipment. What should we do?

Vector recommends registering as medically dependent with your electricity retailer, and having a back-up plan for outages. If the problem is inside your house, call us and say so.

I felt a tingle from a light or an appliance. Is that urgent?

Treat it as a warning. WorkSafe says a tingle is usually a sign of danger: switch the item off, stop using it and have it checked by a licensed electrical worker. If the tingle came from a tap, a switch or a fixed fitting, call us straight away.

Do you come out to the suburbs around Point Chev?

Yes: Westmere, Waterview, Mount Albert, Grey Lynn, Kingsland and Avondale, and the rest of Auckland too.
