Commercial electrician for Point Chevalier businesses

Point Chevalier has two shopping strips with a history: the interwar shops along Point Chevalier Road and the town centre at Hall Corner on Great North Road. Our registered electricians look after the businesses in them, and in the offices and workshops around them.

Two shopping strips, both from between the wars

Point Chevalier's shops grew up with its trams. The tram line reached Hall Corner, where Great North Road meets Point Chevalier Road, in March 1930, and ran down Point Chevalier Road to the end of the point until 1953. The shops along both roads date largely from those interwar years. When Auckland Council surveyed the suburb's heritage in 2014, it found that a group of interwar shops along Point Chevalier Road met the criteria for a heritage area, and that four buildings in the town centre at Hall Corner, among them the Ambassador Theatre of about 1929, met the criteria for heritage scheduling.

For a business in one of those buildings the electrics can carry the same layers as an old house: the original supply, a board added to over the decades, and the fit-out of every tenant before you. That is why we treat a commercial job in Point Chev the same way as a bungalow rewire, starting with what is already in the walls and at the board.

Fit-outs, lighting and data

A new tenancy usually means new power where the counters, equipment and workstations will sit, new lighting, and data cabling for the eftpos, the phones and the office network. We plan those together, so the cable runs make sense and the board has the circuits for them.

Lighting is often the quickest saving a business can make. EECA estimates that switching to LEDs alone can cut lighting costs by up to 70 percent, and more with controls such as occupancy sensors in store rooms and toilets. Old fluorescent tubes, metal halide and low voltage halogen fittings can often be replaced with LED quite simply, EECA notes.

Faults and call-outs

Power lost in the middle of trading, at any hour. Our 24/7 call-outs cover businesses as well as homes.

The paperwork a landlord or insurer will ask for

Prescribed electrical work falls into three risk categories, low-risk, general and high-risk, and the category decides the paperwork: general and high-risk work must have a Certificate of Compliance, high-risk work must also be inspected, and low-risk maintenance does not need a Certificate of Compliance. WorkSafe sets out the risk categories and certification: Certificates of Compliance, Records of Inspection and Electrical Safety Certificates, and who is responsible for each. High-risk work, which includes mains work, has to be inspected by a licensed electrical inspector, and we arrange the inspector when the job needs one.

Every piece of prescribed work we finish is tested and comes with the certification that applies to it. Keep those papers: a landlord, a buyer or an insurer may well ask to see them, and they are the record of what is behind the walls for whoever comes next.

Commercial questions

Can work be done outside our trading hours?

Tell us your trading hours when you call, and the work can be planned around them so customers are not disturbed.

Our shop is in an old building. Does that change anything?

It can. Auckland Council's 2014 heritage survey found that some of Point Chevalier's interwar shops met the criteria for heritage scheduling, so check with the building owner and Auckland Council before changing anything visible on the street front. Inside, older buildings often hide earlier wiring, which we test before connecting anything new to it.

Can you put in the data cabling as well as the power?

Yes. Fibre optic and data cabling is part of what we do, so the network points, the phone system and the eftpos can be wired in the same job as the power and lighting.

Do you work for businesses outside Point Chevalier?

Yes. Our electricians work for businesses across Auckland, the North Shore included, as well as the shops and offices of Point Chev.

What happens if the power goes in the middle of a busy day?

Call 021 156 4005. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
